Buyer's Remorse: minimate addiction edition

So many minimates were discounted at Toys R Us this week. For some reason the newest wave of Marvel minimates are $3.99 each. I only wanted one set, but the Walking Dead and previous Marvel wave minimates were available at comparable prices. 

So my buyer's remorse is based more on my rational mind telling me not to buy even more minimates.

Santino Marella

I didn't buy this figure, but holy crap did I want to. Not because I know the character or follow wrestling, because I don't, but it's a 6-inch wrestling figure with a sock puppet on his hand.

Buyer's remorse, This weekend In buying toys edition

Spent way too much on costume accessories this week at Target, but that's a blog I gave up a while ago. But toys...

 

Picked up a Hot Wheels car of a rocket powered school bus, which is an odd way to power a school bus, and speaks to a growing trend toward fantasy that I'm not entirely comfortable with for Hot Wheels, but I suppose that's what they use the Matchbox line for. Meanwhile, I wanted a Hot Wheels school bus.

Also picked up a Walking Dead minimate pack because it has a good minimate zombie and a comicbook version of the Governor with bonus eyepatch head. Mostly for the minimate zombie.

Then theres a TMNT lego polybag set which I only picked up for the minifigure with a krang image printed on the torso, simulating the awesome giant alien brain in a robot body torso idea.

 

Also got a Daphne minifigure because some asshole opened all the blind bags so I could look inside them and find the ones I wanted. Kinda mixed feelings on this. On the one hand I got what I wanted, on the other hand this is just a huge dick move. If I saw whoever did this I wonder if I would have yelled at the person doing it, adult or kid. I told a store clerk... And they just walked away and I later saw them working an empty cash register. (The box holding the blind packs had been moved to another part of the store too, so they weren't even near the other Scooby Doo building sets.)

 I also picked up the Voodoo Man becuase he's actually the Freak of Crystal Cove from the recent Mystery Inc. series. In that continuity he's actually Fred Jones' father and town mayor who in realitty kidnapped an infant Fred Jones from his real mystery solving parents in order to extort them into staying away from his criminal plans. In an ironic twist, Fred Jones sr learns to love his adopted son and when Fred'ss real parents return The Freak is also revealed to be a better parent and more loving than Fred's real family who are now corrupt adventurers. Man that was a good show. Anyway, they made a figure of the Freak... And then gave him a new name which makes absolutely no sense.

Of course if you check the Character Building website you realize that in the UK, where CB is located, they do things differently there. Like have all 5 members of the Mystery Inc. gang available through the blind packs. It also turns out that 7 of the monsters aren't part of the Scooby Doo line in the UK. For the US Scooby Doo Character Building release CB folded in minifigures from their Monsters vs. Zombie line, possibly to fill out the Scooby line but more likely because it was the only way to get those figures into US stores. 

Buyer's Remorse Prof X edition

Did I buy it because I really wanted it or because I saw a couple Prof X & Jubilee figures on the shelf and wanted to buy one for proof?

Or did I buy it to put Admiral Ackbar in a floating wheelchair?

I'm not buying a Roadblock

I was interested in getting one of the GI Joe movie Roadblock figures because I figured it would be a neat way to get a 4-inch figure of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. But then I saw the figure in person and I realized the face sculpt made him look far more like Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon.

So it looks like I'm not getting a Roadblock figure until a better face sculpt comes out.

Buyer's Remorse: Easter Weekemd Edition

It's time for another post in the semi-regular Buyer's Remorse feature, where I run down what I bought and tell  you why, and if I regret it enough to return it. The items this week are from this recent Easter Weekend. I also saw some Avengers Legos at a Target, but not the set I wanted, so I skipped them.

Pinypon
I have no idea what this is, but it was in the Target Easter clearance bins for $1.50 and the dude has a pixelated picture of a robot on his shirt. At least I think its a he. The packaging seems to say that all the other figures are girls. And the website is based in Spain. Weird.

The internet says its a new collectible doll with interchangeable hair, clothes, and other accessories. And they have two faces on their head? Probably like the Legos. For $1.50 I'm willing to see what's going on. That's cheaper than a Happy Meal toy.

Darth Vader
Dude, it's a tiny plush Darth Vader for $2. (Again, Target Easter Clearance bins.) The only thing I haven't figured out is if the Jelly Bean bag and associated ribbon is attached to his hands or can be removed without damaging the figure.

Batman Legacy: Arkham City Batman & Catwoman
Found these at a Toys R Us. They had these and the black and white ones which I didn't even consider buying. But this... They're a bit bigger than the DCUC figures, but it's the cheapest I'll get a modern looking 6" Catwoman with Mattel level articulation. Still... $30 for two figures... Wait, that's actually cheaper than Target.


Marvel Grab Zags
Based on jboypacman's posts I decided I wanted to get the Cyclops mini vinyl figure because Cyclops is awesome. Unfortunately it took me buying and opening a package with Spider-Man in it to figure out how to properly squeeze and feel for Cyclops. It's possible but you have to figure out what you're looking for. They're both open so I'm not going to be returning either of these.

Vanity
12-inch figure, or 1:6 scale. I've actually been considering getting this figure for about 2 years now. And I'm seeing a small resurgence of interest in the 12 inch figures from my brain, so I figured: Now or never. Ordered it online, so returning it is very difficult.

Well, that's it! Oh wait, there's also a Justin Bieber set that I bought for the accessories, but I might return that... if for no other reason than I think I can get it cheaper elsewhere.

Holy crap, Don't get any Blinkus

I saw some Blinkus packages at the Dollar Tree the other day. I've seen them at Target and was curious. I enjoy lenticular technology, and the idea of basically fusing that technology to what are essentially cheap Go-Go Bones rip-offs appealed to me. Especially if it served to give the figures a little more personality. So I kinda wanted to get a blind bag and check them out, but not for the prices they go for at Target. A dollar for a bag of three seemed like a safe amount to gamble with, so a purchase was made.

And then a disappointment was had.

I could forgive the bad paint application, I mean for this size and price point, bad paint is almost a given. But the lenticular sticker, the thing that pretty much defines these things, they were peeling off all the figures in the bag.

The glue was pretty dry too, no quick fix here. Nope, it seemed like the stickers would peel off completely soon after I had bought them. Disappointing? Very much so. I mean I spent $1 and felt ripped off. That's just not right.

Add to that the disappointing figures that I got. A couple generic monsters which were pretty lame, and a robot which had, I thought, a cute lenticular transformation from a nervous robot into a robot with a bullet hole through its head.

But one figure I liked out of three, with all three having issues with their stickers staying on, well, I'm not getting any more of these, for any price.

Buyer's Remorse: "I Don't Even Play The Damn Games" Edition

Since my Target has the Series 6 Halo Reach accessory packs I picked up the Team Objectives Spartan Mark V. When we first talked about the wave on the Articulated Monster Podcast (I don't remember what episode), I expressed great interest in the Capture the flag set since it came with standard Red & Blue Spartans with flags. I thought it was the perfect way to get Sarge and Caboose figures, two great characters from the Red vs. Blue Series by Rooster Teeth.

But then it turned out that I read the solicitation wrong and it was actually this set.... Also they added the skulls because they cancelled the Headhunter set. (I don't know what a Headhunter game is. The other James says its a game mode. Or something like that. I just read the press releases.) It's cool and all, but it's not a perfect interpretation of Sarge since it's not an interpretation of Sarge at all but a generic red character. Still, you've got to love all the accessories. Flaming skulls and three flags! Also a gravity hammer. But I dunno if it's worth $30. (Are 5 flaming skulls good? I assume it's a game reference.)

Still, Sarge is awesome.

Buyer's remorse: DC Universe Edition

You know, one of my New Years resolutions was going to be to not buy toys through January unless they were from a convention or special toy show. Then I went to a Target that had some good clearance deals and a selection of DC Superheroes Legos. And that resolution ended in less than 24 hours.

But since this is about my Buyer's Remorse, let's go over why I bought each item and why I might want to return them. Because the name of this blog is WHY DID I BUY THAT TOY?

1. Fisher Price Little People: Batman & Joker 
I got this for my young cousin who is going to get hand me downs of his sisters Little People toys, so I thought I'd give him a boys toy update. Then if he gets into Batman I'll always know what to get him for Christmas and Birthdays. Also, it was on clearance, so I got a little bit off an otherwise expensive toy. I'm not set to see my cousin for a while, so I might return this if I find a better present for him.

2. Catwoman's Catcycle City Chase Lego set. 
Even though they were hard to find at Toys R Us at Christmas, the prediction that these DC Superheroes Legos would be plentifully available at Target after the holidays has proven correct even sooner than anticipated. This is one of the basic sets, and I've wanted a Batman Lego ever since I got into Legos (which was long after they put out the Batman Lego toys.) But I'm still on the fence about keeping this set. I feel I'll make my decision after I see/get the big Joker's Carnival set which comes with Batman, Robin, Joker, Harley, Riddler, and thug. After that if I think $12 is worth a Catwoman/catcyle then I'll hold onto this.

3. Young Justice Aqua Lad and Robin 6 inch figures
I got these because they were half off. I don't have either character in this scale, but they're animated style faces are a sharp difference from the rest of my DCUC collection. That said, $10 for the Robin Rooftop base seems like it might be sorta worth it. And I'm pretty sure this may be the only 6" DCUC figure of this Aqualad ever made. And even if it's not, this one was $10, came with insane accessories and a cool looking diorama base.

On the other hand, $20 for figures I'm not even sure I really want just because I like the diorama bases? I need to think on this one.

Just a thing.

Thanks to pre-ordering, I think I've purchased 90% of the toys I'm going to buy for the next 3 months. Lord, it's going to cost so much...

So on Black Friday, I will not be looking for toys.

Buyer's Remorse returns

So this weekend the only item I picked up which spurred the Buyer's Remorse is this guy. I'm not certain if I'm going to keep this Jack Knight DCUC figure, but I've never seen one before so I figured I should pick it up... just in case. So should I keep it? I don't know. That it has less articulation that most DCUC figures is kinda weird. But really, how much am I going to pose it?

And I love the character and I like that they printed the astrology star from the back of his figure.

buyer's remorse for the last weekend of July

There are two Targets in my city. Sadly they're locally known as the rich people's Target and the poor people's Target. I pretty much live across the street from the poor people's Target. They're toy aisle right now is in poor shape. Bare shelves with occassional common peg warmers. So today I decided to checkk out the rich people's Target and of course they've got all the new toys. Batman Legacy, Mario Kart K'Nex,, Young Justice, Assassin's Creed 4 inch figures, Monster High playsets... So much stuff.

So I ended up spending more than I usually do. And of course now I have buyer's remorse. What will I keep? What will I return?

Incidentally, let me just say about the Mario Kart tracks, I wish I had known that the tracks would come with cars and figures. I probably could have saved a lot of money. On the other hand all the tracks come with motorized cars that require batteries rather than the pull back motors from the stand alone sets. And I hate toys that REQUIRE batteries. But the carts are included and that makes the price go up, way up. So I wouldn't be shocked if I don't get that many tracks. I basically got this expansion track because it can be turned into a complete track for the pull back cars and because it was the cheapest.

Buyer''s Remorse: June 5th edition

Did a run of a local K-marts & Wal-Marts and boy am I broke.

Picked up a lot of Green Lantern stuff. Found a K-Mart with a lot of Green Lantern Classics Wave 1 in. Then there was the Wal-Mart which had a Green Lantern construct helicopter that is actually 11smaller  individual constructs that combine into helicopter construct. I'm going to spend some time analyzing how the constructs look apart and then decide if I'll keep it. The thing is, yes there's a buzsaw construct, but it's a buzzsaw that has to also look like a rotor on a helicopter.

I'm also probably going to return some of the Classics stuff... or most of it. I got in kind of an excited tizzy about possibly putting together the Arkillo BAF, until I realized that it might cost cost less to just buy the complete figure on ebay. Plus it's damned near impossible to find Arkillo's right leg since its the one that comes with the hard to find on shelves Kyle Rayner.

And really, Mongul Jr? Black Lantern Abin Sur? Guy with a cape? I can easily pass on all of these. Although I do need Low/Maash to fill out my Sinestro Corps....

Buyer's Remorse: Fake Poop edition

So hey, fake poop for a $1 at Target. But to keep it or not to keep it? It's only $1. I spend more on that on a candy bar. But that's a $1 I can spend on Green Lantern toys. And as Ben Franklin once said, "Dipshit, save your money so you can spend it on better things."

But on the keep it side of the argument, it makes a squeak noise when you squeeze it.

Buyer's Remorse: Memorial Day Weekend 2011

So I actually did return a lot of the stuff from last week's Buyer's Remorse post. Some of it because I could get cheaper, some of it because I realized I didn't really want it.

Of course, then I went on to buy new toys. Here's a picture of three items I purchased. I did get some other stuff, but I'm definately keeping it. These three items however are the ones I'm on the fence about and might return.

Buyer's Remorse: Weekend of May 21-22

Time for what might be a regular feature here on Why Did I Buy That Toy? I call it "Buyer's Remorse" and it comes down to this:

I take a picture of the toys I purchased this weekend that I'm thinking of returning because I'm not certain I should have spent the money on them. At the store it seemed like a good idea, but now that the initial thrill has worn off, I don't know if I should have spent that amount of money on something I'm feeling a little so-so about. Invariably some of the items will be returned, possibly all, but I might decide that something is worth keeping, and it will eventually show up on this site. Probably in a month or so.

If there anything on here you think I ABSOLUTELY should keep, let me know and I'll take it into consideration. So here's this weekend's photo!
