Avengers vs. X-men minimate fan poll

Can anyone else vote on the Toys R Us Avengers vs. X-men minimate fan poll? I can't, but I wonder if I should try again later in the day/week.

Unlike last year's Heralds of Galactus poll, I don't really have a horse in this race. Picking 4 out of 6 minimates for a box set is less exciting if I've already got minimates of most of the characters already. So the new costumes they're wearing better be impressive. I'll just vote for whatever looks cool. But first I need to see better pictures of the prototypes.

I feel like I'm probably going to pick the ridiculous anti-Phoenix Iron Man armor. Also the Phoenix powered X-men look like they might be groovy.

About Hot Toys New Black Widow figure

I gotta say, I was a lot more exited about this Avengers Hot Toys Black Widow figure back when I believed the rumors that it would have sculpted hair. Rooted hair always makes me think its too much like a Barbie doll. I don't know why this is surprising. The Iron Man 2 Black Widow had rooted hair, why should this be different?

Whelp, got the new Lego Club magazine in the mail. There's some pretty heavy handed foreshadowing of the Lego Dinosaur releases. It's the tail end of a comic that ties the Atlantis, Pharaohs Quest, and Alien Conquest lines together. Personally I'm looking forward to it. And I love the idea that all the non-licensed Lego lines are part of one uber-line.

Also, a free DVD with Lego commercials and animated bits. It's the coollest free thing I've gotten in the mail that I'll probably never watch!

Who is trapped in the Pandorica? Everyone.

So the Underground Toys Doctor Who SDCC exclusive is going to be River Song with the Pandorica Chair, which actually includes a base that connects to the Pandorica Walls from that recent Pandorica wave of toys.

And it goes out of its way to mention that it is compatible with all regular 11th Doctor figures.

Man, I sort of want this now. Especially since it means you can trap almost any Doctor Who figure in the Pandorica.

Wal-Mart doesn't care about toy collectors. (Imagine it in a Kanye voice.)

Just a thing to watch out for. I went to Wal-Mart and noticed that they had put back on the shelf some Green Lantern Classics figures that were missing the Build-A -Figure piece. No sticker on it, no price discount, just up there on the shelf.

It wouldn't be too egregious, other than the obvious problem of some dick buying them, pulling out the pieces he wanted, and returning them.

EXCEPT: These were the exact same figures that I had informed them, explaining it to 3 employees and a manager, of missing the BAF piece 2 weeks ago. They said they'd have to e-mail everyone to make them aware that stuff like this was happening. So they were aware of the problem and decided to put them back on the shelf without putting something out there alerting customers to the missing pieces. For full price.

And when I once again took them to Customer Service and talked to a manager her response was, "well, what do you want us to do about it. The only thing we could do is pull them from the shelf." Which she then DID NOT DO.

So seriously, watch out because Wal-Mart doesn't care if they sell you bad products and don't feel bad about not having any loyalty to Wal-Mart. (But on the same side of things, don't be a dick and return merchandise after you've stolen the bits you want out of the package.)

Which is kind of stating the obvious.

Oh great, they made a hard to get Doctor Who figure

Let me just say I wanted this Amelia Pond as a little girl figure, featuring the young child seen in episodes 1 & 13 during season 5, a hell of a lot more before I found out it was out of scale with the other 5 inch figures.

I mean come on, an exclusive figure of a character I love that is only available in England, at the Doctor Who special exhibition? That's like telling me there's something amazing that I'll never be able to have... wait, that's not like it, that is exactly what's happening. And of course I'm going to want it then.

Mattel Reveals SDCC 2011 Exclusives! I'm . . . Only Slighty Excited.

Last night G4's Attack of the Show program revealed most of Mattel's exclusive figures that will be on sale at this year's San Diego Comic-Con (no Masters of the Universe Classics were discussed, but in case you are wondering, apparently the line will be represented at SDCC by Queen Marlena and a Polly Pocket three-pack--no, I'm serious). Game Trailers - E3 2011 - AOTS Exclusive

Brief thoughts:

*Why couldn't Kilowog and Swamp Thing be released to mass retail as Collect and Connect figures? They seem tailor-made for that approach.

*Not at all impressed with Swamp Thing. The sculpt is too bland and too "generic muscled superhero", as opposed to the potential offered by giving us something along the lines of Steve Bissette's hyper-detailed art on Alan Moore's classic Saga of the Swamp Thing tenure. Also, the bio-degradable life-sized mask is a pretty lame pack-in.

*I'm reasonably certain that Hasbro's Marvel Universe Galactus was bigger than that Stay-Puft Marshmellow Man.

*I'm more excited about that six-inch scale superposable Voltron robot figure than I thought I would be. I really haven't been this excited by Voltron since I was four.

Mattel's messed-up business plan

I don't collect Mattel's online exclusive Masters of the Universe Classics line, primarily because I don't have the money ($20 a figure plus shipping???) and I'm largely content with my 2002 series figures. Still, there's a few I'd like to get--that is, if Mattel didn't so badly manage the line.

If you unawares, last week Trap-Jaw and Battle Cat went on sale. The former sold out in less than ten minutes, and the latter went not long after that. Furthermore, even people who signed into the MattyCollector.com website right when the items were available ran into page loading problems, costing them figures even if they put them in their online ordering cart. The whole event was a debacle of epic proportions that has had reverberations through the collecting community since, so much so Mattel has had to issue a press release to address the situation. Now, it's great that they acknowledged that there were problems and have indicated that they will make more Trap-Jaw and Battle Cat figures, but one paragraph jumped out at me as quite baffling:

For Adora and Trap Jaw the first two 2010 figures, we did not really have a baseline of what the demand would be above and beyond the 2010 subscription. We sold way more subscriptions in 2010 vs. 2009, so we had to be very careful not to over produce beyond what the demand would be above the subscribers. This is why we produced only a small amount beyond the subscription to start off (especially knowing if we sold out we would and will go back into production for a second run of popular sold out figs!).

So wait, let me get this straight: it never occured to Mattel that there might be more than a few people who didn't purchase the year-long subscription to buy every single figure coming out in a 12-month period? Mattel did not consider that people might not have gotten a subscription because either A). they couldn't afford it, or B). they simply didn't want every figure?
